Remembering the Wildest Thing |
Maurice Sendak: June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012. Maurice Sendak meant so much to so many people. Here I've created a place for reblogs and submissions focussing on Sendak and his writing. If anyone would like to, I'd also love to hear about the effect his work has had on his many fans. |

“People say, ‘Oh, Mr. Sendak. I wish I were in touch with my childhood self, like you!’ As if it were all quaint and succulent, like Peter Pan. Childhood is cannibals and psychotic vomiting in your mouth! I say, ‘You are in touch, lady–you’re mean to your kids, you treat your husband like shit, you lie, you’re selfish … That is your childhood self!’” —Maurice Sendak

” My first exposure to Maurice Sendak was as a child reading “Where the Wild Things Are.” From the first time I saw it I was…
“But the wild things cried, “Oh please don’t go - we’ll eat you up - we love you so!”
And Max said, “No!”
The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved goodbye.”-Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak
Thank you for writing the things you wrote, Maurice Sendak! I don’t know what my childhood would’ve been like without you.

Images from Pacific Northwest Ballet’s The Nutcracker. This version of Nutcracker, still in production today, was choreographed by former PNB artistic director, Kent Stowell in the early 80’s. There are many special elements of this particular Nutcracker adaptation, but what I’d like to point out specifically, are the costume and set designs by Maurice Sendak. In the photo above, you can see him with former PNB Principal Dancer Patricia Barker on set in 1986. hate to be biased, but it’s my absolute favorite version of this ballet. See Here…
